Hashimoto’s and the naturopathic approach

Can you relate? Weight gain, fatigue, brain fog, digestive complaints, hair loss, brittle nails, menstrual issues, cold sensitivity, and more…

These are but some of many symptoms which are associated with a low metabolism which is a sign of hypothyroid function and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (Hechtman, 2020).

Hashimoto’s is a chronic autoimmune disease which triggers the body to attack the thyroid. This causes slow destruction and inflammation of the thyroid and suboptimal performance of all thyroid related functions in the body (Hechtman, 2020). If you have Hashimoto’s, chances are, you have a low performing thyroid and are already taking medication to help your thyroid function.

Despite medication and seemingly optimal TSH levels in the blood, many people still experience all or some of the above symptoms. Why is that?

Conventional treatment does little to nothing to help reduce or stop the body attacking the thyroid or looking at and treating the actual cause of the Hashimoto’s. The most commonly prescribed medication is T4 (Thyroxine) and this only helps improve TSH levels which is the gold standard most GPs use to determine thyroid function (Bowthorpe, 2014). They do not look at how the body uses the hormone it is given and how well it is converted into the substance we need (free T3) for our metabolism to increase (Bowthorpe, 2014)

As a Naturopath, I am a detective trained to uncover the root of the problem to find long term solutions to make you feel better. I do this by conducting a comprehensive case taking, and by completing thorough testing of blood, urine, stool, hair and/or more. We go deep into the biomedical pathways of the thyroid and related body systems to ensure the body has all the tools and nutrients it needs for long term optimal thyroid health. By tackling the problem at the root cause, further thyroid destruction can be halted or slowed considerably (Wentz, 2020).
